A Wish

By , April 22, 2008 3:06 pm
One of my closest friends is into a very serious stage of depression. I knew about this only when I was already far from her — when I could not reach her anymore nor she can reach out to me anytime she want to. Well we still make calls but at times a “touch” means more than words to comfort a troubled mind. I did not know that she is into a serious trouble not until someone very close to her told me about it that it has started way back late 90′s and that I could not believe. I always believe that my friend is a happy person and that she and her hubby is my “ideal couple” that is why when the separate ways I just couldn’t believe it. i wish to know the deep truth but I am so far so information was limitted. She’s been into several doctors but none could get out what’s really wrong with her and what causes her depression. Three doctors in three different hospitals gave her some medicines to regulate her moods since that time that she became addicted to it. Just imagine, she can pop up 10 pcs or more of sleeping drugs to make her get to sleep. And she now takes anti-depressants not prescribed by the doctor. So she sort of addicted to these meds who she thinks gave her the “high” she needs. I did realize how the meds affected her the last time we met and bond in Cebu. She was not the cheerful girl or woman I knew before. There was much silence between us but I consier it a bit normal for anyone in her situation but it is abnormal if I really think back to the way we were when were still in our early 20′s. So my wish for real for her this time is drug rehabiliation in a place like this:

Not a small room where u can only see is white walls enclosing you and you are being secluded from the world. In my opinion – it seems it can cause more depression and the more one longs for the meds that makes her ok. I think it takes much effort and courage for an addicted person to be in a drug rehab to be detoxified. Early effects of detoxification can be a real test to one’s moods, but doctors and nurses in rehab centers makes drug treatment a pleasant one.I wish this institution is here in our country and I will surely recommend her to be treated there. Not just anyone with manic depression but those with with alcohol problems too they can be treated at their alcohol rehab. Thank God my cousin is not yet in deep trouble with alcohol but we have this place on our list incase things will get worst.

Scrumptious Sunday – Cakes

I love cakes! Especially chocolate cakes. Even if one will say it does not taste so nice and yummy, but to me, any cake with color brown or as shown in the picture — they always make me drooling. In my mind, chocolate cake is sooo sweet and yummy that it it is ok for me not to each anything afterwards.

By the way this picture of the fudge was taken last year when I joined an EB with my kuro pals. I bought the whole box for them but I guess they don’t have much sweet tooth or maybe was just shy that I end up eating several pieces of them. hehehehe

The Past 24 Hours

By , March 23, 2008 10:49 am

I went out of the house yesterday at exactly 6 pm off to start working. It is now 6:50 pm as am writing this and believe me, I was only able to dose off for a total of almost 2 hours in my last 24 hours. I went home at 7 am this morning then slept for an hour. I have to get up because it is Recognition program at my daughter’s school. This noon, while waiting for the IBE Team to come, I dozed off at one of the sofa here in the office and slept for maybe 30 minutes and I have to be up or else they would catch me snoring. hahahaha

Few hours sleep in 24 hours has happened to me twice this week. Well, am just glad it’s only twice. I am sure Iwould get sick if it will go on for more than a week. I am really sleepy now. I am suppose to go home earlier but my boss said, not to leave the office. ok…I won’t but really, i won’t stay up too late na because the inspection has already began. Ohhh wish i could sleep now.

Scrumptious Sunday – Casserole

By , March 16, 2008 3:30 pm

My choice this time is vegetarian one.

I love tofu. What I will be sharing here is not my own made recipe but I cooked this one without looking at the cookbook. I cooked it the way I was taught by chinese friends and it is very similar to what am sharing here. The difference is just the addition of parmisian cheese.

Ingredients:

2 tbs oil
1 small chopped onion
one clove garlic, minced
1 block of tofu, diced
3/4 cup fresh ripe tomatoes (cubed)
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup grated Monterey Jack cheese, or cheddar or the like
optional-you can add a chopped green pepper or some chopped fresh mushrooms with the onion if you like (or both!).

Directions:

Heat skillet and add oil.
Sautee the onion and garlic til soft (and other veggie if you’re adding any…)
Add tofu and tomato sauce and stir.
Add Parmesan cheese and mix.
Sprinkle the jack cheese over the top and place the lid on the skillet, and immediately remove from heat.
Serve as is or sprinkled over noodles or rice.

Helicobacter Pylori

By , February 25, 2008 6:06 am

Helicobacter Pylori or widely known as H. Pylori. The first time i come across this was when i was enrolled in Microbiology class. H. Pylori sounds cute. Right? Cute but deadly. hahaha. I thought of blogging about this bacteria because several friends of mine are positive with H. Pylori after having done endoscropy and one mom of my friend, it helps her develop stomach cancer. So I hope that with this post, I can share to you abit of the important facts about this bacterium.

WHAT IS H. PYLORI?

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium that causes chronic inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach (gastritis) in humans. This bacterium also is the most common cause of ulcers worldwide. H. pylori infection is most likely acquired by ingesting contaminated food and water and through person to person contact. Infected individuals usually carry the infection indefinitely unless they are treated with medications to eradicate the bacterium. One out of every six patients with H. pylori infection will develop ulcers of the duodenum or stomach. H. pylori also is associated with stomach cancer and a rare type of lymphocytic tumor of the stomach called MALT lymphoma.

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

1. Blood antibody tests
2. urea breath tests (UBT)
3. stool antigen test
4. endoscropic biopsies

HOW TO TREAT?

H. pylori is difficult to eradicate from the stomach because it is capable of developing resistance to commonly used antibiotics. Therefore, two or more antibiotics usually are given together with a PPI and/or bismuth containing compounds to eradicate the bacterium. (Bismuth and PPIs have anti-H. pylori effects.) Examples of combinations of medications that are effective are:

a PPI, amoxicillin (Amoxil) and clarithromycin (Biaxin)
a PPI, metronidazole (Flagyl), tetracycline and bismuth subsalicylate

These combinations of medications can be expected to cure 70%-90% of infections. However, studies have shown that resistance of H. pylori (failure of antibiotics to eradicate the bacteria) to clarithromycin is common among patients who have prior exposure to clarithromycin or other chemically similar macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin). Similarly, H. pylori resistance to metronidazole is common among patients who have had prior exposure to metronidazole. In these patients, doctors have to find other combinations of antibiotics to treat the H. pylori. Antibiotic resistance is another reason why antibiotics should be used carefully and judiciously for the right reasons, and indiscriminate use of antibiotics for improper reasons should be discouraged.

WHY TREAT H. PYLORI?

Chronic infection with H. pylori weakens the natural defenses of the lining of the stomach against the ulcerating action of acid. Medications that neutralize stomach acid (antacids), and medications that decrease the secretion of acid in the stomach (H2-blockers and proton pump inhibitors or PPIs) have been used effectively for many years to treat ulcers.

Antacids, H2-blockers and PPIs, however, do not eradicate H. pylori from the stomach, and ulcers frequently return promptly after these medications are discontinued. Hence, antacids, H2-blockers or PPIs have to be taken daily for many years to prevent the return of the ulcers and the complications of ulcers such as bleeding, perforation, and obstruction of the stomach. Eradication of H. pylori prevents the return of ulcers and ulcer complications even after the medications are stopped. Eradication of H. pylori also is important in the treatment of the rare condition known as MALT lymphoma of the stomach. Treatment of H. pylori to prevent stomach cancer is still controversial.

The Two Things

By , February 10, 2008 8:28 am

Two things ran out of me today.

The first is this:

the Naked spray my sis gave me more than a year ago. It was not new though when she handed it to me but she said she likes me to have it because she can buy one again for herself which is somethign I never buy for me. hehehe

The second one is:
The food supplement i’ve been taking for more than a year now. It took me so long to finish it because I sometimes forget to drink it. One bottle contains 240 capsules and I take 2 pcs daily. There was really a span of time I forgot to drink it and then I can feel my ankle pains so I have to take this to avoid the pains. I took the last 2 capules today and there will be none for tomorrow.

Well, both of these are used by me for the first times. :)

Eating Noodles the HealthyWay

By , January 13, 2008 7:10 am
In reality, eating instant noodles is unhealthy. But I don’t understand why in almost all stores in my country, noodles abound! Endlessly! And people buy it everyday, too! Most household have it in their homes. Even one brand put on an advertisement that noodles can make a kid bright. I think that ad is misleading as MSG causes dullness and even kidney problems.

In my home, we often have a few packs of them every week but we don’t eat them the way it is. When I say bad, it should mean we should not eat it. But I made a way that I can eat noodles and give it a tag of – eating noodles in a healthy way.

1. Cook the noodles according to instruction except that double the portion of water being mentioned. If the instruction says 1 cup, use 2. If it says 2 cups, use 3 and so on.

2. While waiting for the water to boil or it has started to simmer, add tomatoes. Ample amount of red tomatoes and wait for it to boil and the tomatoes cooked.

3. When tomatoes cooked and boiling is going on, add thinly sliced carrots, thinly sliced spring breans, and the flavoring powder. Add it full because you have doubled the amount of water instructed on the label. Allow it to boil for a short time.

4. Add thinkly sliced cabbage, or lettuce, or pechay.

5. Serve hot!

In this way, the monosodium glutamate that goes with the noodles is not much and the soup has nutrients because of the vegetables cooked with it.

Do you love noodles? I do! But I cook and eat it this way. :)

Life As it Should Be with Zero Coca-Cola

By , December 22, 2007 4:40 pm
While growing up, I am always told that sodas have harmful effects in our body. But I can’t help it once in a while but drink Coke. Am not a Coke addict but I love its taste. It’s many years I have stopped drinking it when there is chance of drinking it for health reasons.

Now there’s good news for all of us. There is now an available Zero Sugar Coke. It is the healthy version of coke that is good for us anytime in our life. Life at times sucks without Coke especially if you are addicted to it and you have low tolerance for sugar, but that will be over now with Real Taste Coca-Cola.

By the way, there is also a good news for creative artists!

  • There is a chance for you to direct your own clip showing Coke Zero campaign. Coke has found some old b/w film clips that you, as the director, can manipulate by using an easy voice recorder. You can write “the conversation” to your own clip and say what ever you want. Afterwards your movie competes with other movies to be the highest rated. Check more details here.

Because of this zero sugar? Am sure am gonna love coke now! :)
